April 9, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EAST WENATCHEE, WA – The City of East Wenatchee is happy to announce that Mayor Crawford has made a conditional offer of employment to Rick Johnson, Chief of Patrol at the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, for the position of Police Chief, pending agreement and City Council approval at the April 21 council meeting.
This decision was made after a rigorous hiring process with Prothman, where the consulting firm evaluated 20 applicants and a panel interviewed the top 6. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 crisis, the city was unable to hold a public forum with the finalists. Mayor Crawford made the final selection from the top 2 candidates.
Johnson, a Douglas County resident, began his career in law enforcement with the Toppenish Police Department in 2001, before making a move to the Wenatchee Police Department, where he served from 2003-2016. Johnson served as a Sergeant from 2013-2016, with the majority of the time being with the Pro-Act Unit (Gang Interdiction) and as a member and leader on the Regional SWAT Team. In 2016, Johnson moved to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office where he is the Chief of Patrol.
Johnson has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Central Washington University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He attended the West Point Model Leadership Training, offered by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and holds a Middle Management Certification from the Washington Criminal Justice Training Center. He currently serves as the District 9 Representative of the Washington State Tactical Officers Association.
Johnson, his wife and family consider East Wenatchee as their community, where he has participated in reading programs at a local school and coached AAU basketball. Johnson is also a member of the Wenatchee Central Lions and is involved in Special Olympics.
Mayor Crawford said, “There were several exceptional candidates for this position. Rick has many years in law enforcement, a solid education, and quality leadership skills. He is well connected with our community and has a passion to serve and be a part of our East Wenatchee team. Rick is the right choice for East Wenatchee.”
